I was just thinking about how bad it would be to get suddenly, violently allergic to something I've enjoyed eating all my life. See, I wouldn't mind being allergic to broccoli, say, but I would hate not being able to eat seafood or chocolate because my throat constricts every time I try. What causes sudden allergic reactions like that anyway? You're chowing down on nice, juicy steak leftovers and you start coughing and spluttering and have to rush to the ER, when the day before you were fine eating the exact same thing. OK, so I don't know many people who are allergic to meat, but ... you catchh my drift.
Maybe this board won't get too many responses, but I thought it's probably something no one's come up with yet. What could you (or couldn't you) live without being able to eat? Besides seafood and chocolate, I don't think I could bear the thought of not eating spicy foods.
This is all in theory, you guys. I know if either one of us was forced into a situation where we couldn't eat something because of an allergy we had to it, we'd deal with it accordingly and move on with our happy little lives. So ...

Well, I've seen people develop allergies and then a year or two later the allergy was gone. My cat developed allergies to chicken and fish. Point is your idea isn't quite as out there as you might think. For me, I'd go through hell if I were allergic to coffee. I'm truly adicted to it. I don't drink as much as some people I know, but if I had to do without it, I wouldn't be the nicest person in the world.
Oh, I know it's not out there, as you put it. I guess I got to thinking about it when I read about someone on my LJ Friends' list having a bad allergic reaction to shrimp, and she had eaten it all her life. The doctor she went to said it was common for people to suddenly develop allergies to things they used to eat with no problems, especially shellfish. I just think that's fascinating. Unfortunate, but definitely interesting.
I had a similar experience, only the other way around. When I was a kid I was allergic to eggs, couldn't eat them without getting really sick. Then, suddenly, one day I could eat them. You're right, allergies are fascinating. Broadening things for a second, why, for example, am I now violently allergic to cats, and I grew up with cats in my house with no problems? Yet now I can't be around one for more than a few minutes without my respiratory system melting down. What's up with that?
Well when it comes to cats, it could be several things that I've heard about, which convinces me that nobody really knows. Some say its the cat dander. Others say its his/her saliva and the reaction with the fir, and others say its the reaction to the dander. My wife was very allergic to our first cat, but doesn't seem to suffer as much now.
I've lived on beans and rice since I was about 23 and if I couldn't have this for just one day I'd surely die. I don't have a sweet tooth nor do I eat many different things so I really can't think of anything else that an alergic reaction would keep me from eating. Is that sentence wrong? Oh well, who cares.
I would hate being alergic to pizza or posta. I think alergies just happen. I really don't have a clue is to why though. I don't have any food allergies thank goodness!

Yuck. I've had cats before, and I am allergic to them, but I'm OK after a little while of being around them. Well, as long as they're family cats or whatever, because as soon as I come in contact with a strange cat, my allergies start acting up.
I would hate being allergic to pizza, spicy food, and chocolate.
What you described happened to me. I became allergic to beef at 24...One day I could eat it, the next time I did, I broke out in hives, swelled up, and my throat closed...Every subsequent time I've tried, same thing. I just don't eat it anymore.
